PERRYSBURG — There
are very few things in basketball that can off-set a
great game on defense.
For Perrysburg’s girls basketball team, though, bad
shooting did just that in a 32-31 overtime loss to
Findlay on Wednesday night.
Despite holding the smaller-sized Trojans to just a
12-for-39 (30 percent) effort from the field, the
Yellow Jackets shot 10-for-46 (21 percent) to cancel
out what was a great defensive effort.
It was a Megan Lammers 3-pointer from the left-side
of the arc that gave Findlay the winning basket with
33 seconds remaining. Lammers finished with a
game-high 12 points, all coming from behind the
3-point line for the Trojans, who improved to 7-2.
Perrysburg dropped to 5-2.
“Awful offense,” said Perrysburg coach Todd Sims.
“Give (Findlay) credit, though, they defended us,
but we had a lot of open shots and in your home
building you’d like to we’d make some of those.
“Their defensive pressure had something to do with
it, but our offensive execution was part of it too.”
Perrysburg shot 10-for-45 in regulation and was
0-for-1 in overtime, as all four of its points came
at the line. Findlay went 2-for-7, but trailed the
Yellow Jackets, 30-27, with 1:37 left in overtime as
three Nicole Delas foul shots had been all the
scoring in the first two minutes.
Findlay’s Danielle Sallisbury converted a lay-in
inside and was fouled with 1:19 to go, but missed
the free throw to keep Perrysburg up one.
Following a miss on the ensuing offensive rebound of
Sallisbury’s shot, Taylor Knight converted 1-of-2
foul shots for the Yellow Jackets to push the
advantage to 31-29.
“We’re extremely fortunate to come away with a win,”
said Findlay coach Connie Lyon. “We’re a smaller
team and we just did what we could to survive
essentially. Had (Perrysburg) hit more of the shots
we didn’t get out on, that would’ve been the ball
game.”
Missed shots from the perimeter plagued the Yellow
Jackets all game, as they were 4-for-20 from 3-point
range. Findlay finished 6-for-13, with four of those
coming in the second quarter when Findlay went on a
16-3 run to lead 21-10 at halftime.
“I think we lost the game in the first half,” said
Sims. “Getting down by 11 and just being lethargic.
But I was happy with the defensive effort all game.”
Perrysburg’s defense held the Trojans scoreless in
the third quarter, as it scored 10 points to close
within 21-20 entering the final eight minutes. Six
points came from Mesker, who finished with a
team-high 10 points and added eight rebounds. The
Jackets finished with a 30-26 edge on the boards, as
the two squads finished regulation tied at 27.
“I don’t think (Mesker) got enough touches,” said
Sims of the 5-foot-11-inch senior. “If they double
her, someone is open and you can’t tell them not to
shoot, but there are certain times she is open
one-on-one and we’re still unsure when to get her
the ball.”
Perrysburg won the junior varsity game, 49-36, as
Maddie Williams scored a game-high 14 points to lead
the Yellow Jackets. |
