*** Freshman Game Summary ***
Perrysburg Starts with a Win
Perrysburg 29, Maumee 21 - 12/04/2009
By: Dean Scheckelhoff

The freshmen girls started out against their across the river rivals in a man to man defense against Maumee’s full court pressure falling back into a 2-3 zone. Perrysburg got the tip and Whitacre hit a jump shot from a Dunphy assist to start out the first offensive possession. From there we had a lapse till Smith hit a turnaround jumper at the 3 minute mark. At the 2 minute mark Scheckelhoff stole the ball out front and was fouled on the layup making 1of 2. Maumee returned with a couple of foul shots from a Perrysburg foul and then with 40 seconds left Buehler hit a jumper from a Dunphy assist to bring us to the end of the quarter up 7-2.

The Jackets started the second quarter in a man to man defense picking up there girl at half court against Maumee’s full court pressure falling back into a 2-3. Perrysburg had a good first possession running the play and taking the time needed for the play to materialize but fell short of scoring. Maumee turned around and did the same thing and also fell short. At the 5 minute mark Scheckelhoff was fouled and missed both. At the 4 minute mark Buehler was fouled and missed both. At this stage both teams stepped up the pressure defense causing for some ugly offensive possessions. With 2 min on the clock Poll hit a jumper, Maumee hurried the transition and caught Perrysburg off guard to get an easy jump shot that forced Perrysburg to foul, which Maumee made 1 out of 2. The next time down court Maumee in the full court defense left Whitacre open for a layup in turn they had to foul and Molly made both. This left about 1 minute left on the clock and Maumee set up their offense ran their play took the shot made it and was fouled missing the free throw. Perrysburg’s line error with 25 seconds on the clock allowed Maumee to inbound under their basket which they ran flawlessly for an easy 2. Perrysburg had one last chance when Whitacre was fouled but came up empty on the free throws. This lead to a half score of Perrysburg 11 Maumee 7.

Maumee had a group of approximately 25+ boys taking up a better portion of the front row of the home cheering section. They let it be known that they were cheering for their Maumee girls and spared nothing to heckle our girls when they had a chance (for the most part professionally). This seemed to distract our girls at times but was good experience for what lies ahead of this talented group of girls.

The Jackets started the third quarter in a man to man full court defense against Maumee’s 1-3-1 half court trap falling back into a 2-3. Maumee’s first possession they scored 1 out of 2 foul shots. Then Bueler hit for 2 and was fouled missing the pt after. Next Maumee came down hit a turnaround jumper to make the score 13-10. The next couple of time down the court Bueler was fouled and struggled making the free throws. At the 2 min mark Whitacre hit for 2 and Maumee answered with 2 and forced a Perrysburg turnover and hit for another 2 bringing the score to 17-15. With 5 seconds left Perrysburg had the ball Whitacre got the rebound dribbled out front passed to an open Buehler for an easy 2 to end the quarter up 19-15.

To start the 4th quarter Maumee scored to make it 19-17. After this Perrysburg defense stepped up and forced numerous turnovers and with Maumee’s frustration they committed numerous fouls. Unfortunately in the next 3 minutes Perrysburg could only convert on 2 of 8 foul shots. At the 3 minute mark Smith hit a turnaround jumper and the next time down court she hit Perry for a turnaround jumper then with 1:45 left on the clock Smith was fouled and made both. Maumee made one last run and made 4 of their 6 foul shots in the next minute to bring the score to 27-21, but that was all Maumee could muster as Whitarce hit 2 free throws with a few seconds left to end the game Perrysburg 29 Maumee 21.

Good Job girls

Buehler 3-3-9, Poll 1-0-2, Perry 1-0-2, Whitacre 2-5-9, Smith 2-2-6, Scheckelhoff 0-1-1
